UGC Platinum Alpha Fund – Managed Fund (Wholesale Investors)

An actively managed global growth equity fund which aims to produce superior returns during moderate and low volatility conditions while protecting capital and minimise drawdowns during periods where volatility is above average or markets are down trending.

Fund overview

Targeting superior returns through long term investment in high quality global growth companies from around the world.

The fund invests in global growth companies with the portfolio adopting a Tactical Asset Allocation and Stock Allocation investment approach. Selection within the Stock Allocation component combines businesses that predominantly exhibit Growth at a Reasonable Price (GARP) characteristics. In addition the fund will seek out Momentum opportunities and also include a small allocation to speculative investments.

The investment process incorporates a stock selection process based on key criteria. 1. Technical Analysis; stocks that are in short-, medium-, and long-term uptrends or threatening to begin a new uptrend. 2. Quantitative Quality and Value measures; Fundamental screening and valuation overlay. 3. Qualitative Assessment; Deep dive research into the business models and its industry.

The investment manager will also utilise a range of equity, index, ETF, currency, commodity and derivative instruments to assist us in our management of risk and in achieving our desired net market exposure.

Our objective

Seeking Long Term Capital Growth with Active Risk Management

The Fund is a global equity fund focused on generating an after fee, pre-tax return of the greater of 3% per annum above the MSCI World Index (AUD) or 13% per annum on an absolute basis over a rolling 5 years period*.

The portfolio management strategy is built around a strategic asset allocation and strategy allocation framework which provides the Investment Manager with the most appropriate, yet most flexible portfolio positioning settings. The fund adopts an active risk management overlay to help guard against catastrophic loss, this includes the use of Stock Specific Stop Losses, Portfolio Hedging and Tactical Asset Allocations. The Investment manager will utilise all methods as appropriate and will at times hold large cash positions in unfavourable market conditions.

Our Strategy

UGC Platinum Alpha Fund Strategy

The fund adopts a long term buy and hold investment style that is complimented by shorter term tactical asset allocation positioning in-line with the broader portfolio strategy.

The Fund strategy is a total return focused, concentrated, capital growth biased investment approach, focused on medium to long term investments in largely growth focused listed shares across the world’s major investment markets. The strategy consists of a strict quantitative and qualitative stock selection methodology and assessment process with the portfolio built around a strategic asset allocation framework that provides the Investment Manager with the most appropriate, yet most flexible portfolio positioning settings. The Investment Manager will be aiming to maintain a broad strategic target allocation of approximately 5% Cash, 20% Tactical Asset Allocation and 75% Stock Allocation.

The Investment Manager will utilise leverage across the portfolio through a range of instruments including margin loans, derivatives and leveraged exchange traded funds (ETFs) to enhance the overall exposure of the portfolio to a maximum of 120%, but will also utilise such instruments in hedging strategies with a view to protecting the portfolio against meaningful downside movements.
