Episode 3 – EOFY Sans Louis

Jul 2, 2018 | Podcast Episodes

Welcome to Episode 3 of The Investor Exchange

Louis couldn’t join us this week but the 3 remaining soldiers pushed on and discussed the state of the financial services industry, investment property depreciation, how to identify quality stocks, stand up paddle boarding to work and a penis visible from space.  Listen in to find out more.

How are AMP still in business?

Brett kicked us off with the story of Graeme Cowper, a financial planner reported to ASIC in January 2010 for misconduct yet kept giving advice that ultimately cost NAB $13.4 million in compensation to his clients.  He was finally banned from giving advice 8 years later but only banned for 4 years.  This topic lead to further discussion regarding the closure of Dover Financial Advisers, the failures at AMP and the movement of financial advisers in the industry.

Our Investor Exchange Round Table Discussion Covered:

  • Free Money – well it could be if you are a property investor and not yet claiming depreciation?
With the End of the Financial year upon us, Brett issued a reminder to ensure you are claiming depreciation on any investment property.
  • What’s a good return on the ASX?
Joel explained how UGC make investment decisions and identify quality stocks. The ASX 200 has returned 8% this year, by comparison the UGC portfolio is currently up around 30%.

You Cannot Be Serious this week:

  • Brett dragged us down again with a story about a penis visible from space.
  • Joel brought our attention to a New York commuter paddle boarding across the Hudson River in his business suit in order to make it on time and Joel also reported on the Doomsayers being quoted when their credibility is severely lacking.  (Joel also continued on to explain the stats the really show the state of the economy).
