Employment Stats Suggest Gillard is Gone

An article on Bloomberg today titled “Australia 10% Unemployment for 9.6% Dents Gillard Prosperty”  suggests that despite respectable headline employment numbers, many traditional Labor voters look set to desert labor at the next election.

For clients of UGC and readers of UGC’s weekly newsletter, these statistics come as no surprise. Short sighted policies and power grab tax reforms have only served to actually undermine the strength of Australia’s economy and the very jobs of the voters Labor says it aims to serve.

It is an interesting read as it makes the following points among others:

  • The world’s 12th biggest economy boasts the lowest benchmark interest rate in 53 years, unemployment less than half of Europe’s, contained inflation and an economic growth rate double the average of advanced nations. Even with these conditions — the best since Gough Whitlam took office in 1972 – – Gillard’s ruling Labor Party is 10 percentage points behind the Tony Abbott-led opposition.
  • The unemployment rate is as high as 14% in parts of Western Sydney, traditional labor heartland.
  • The unemployment rate is as high as 27% in some parts around Brisbane where Labor has 5 seats now in play at the next election.
  • Employment in 6 of 19 jobs categories has decreased even as populatuion has increased by $1.8 million since Labor took office.
